History of the horse in Britain
The emergence of mobile herding lifeways in Mongolia and eastern Eurasia was one of the most crucial economic and cultural transitions in human prehistory. Understanding the process by which this played out, however, has been impeded by the absence of a precise chronological framework for the prehistoric era in Mongolia. Model results demonstrate a cultural succession between ambiguously dated Afanasievo, Chemurchek, and Munkhkhairkhan traditions. Geographic patterning reveals the existence of important cultural frontiers during the second millennium BCE. This work demonstrates the utility of a Bayesian approach for investigating prehistoric cultural dynamics during the emergence of pastoral economies. Editor: Peter F.

Strategically placed microchip readers could be used to monitor body temperature in horses, a recent study has shown. Monitoring rectal temperature is a useful technique to identify early signs of respiratory disease. However, it is labour-intensive and time-consuming, and also presents a significant risk to the operator, especially in young stock. The study, which has been published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science , followed 43 Anglo-Arabian foals over two consecutive winter periods starting when they were months old.
The study ran from December to February when the foals were housed in straw-bedded yards with access to outdoor paddocks.
The initial chronological hypotheses Henri Breuil and Denis Peyrony established an association with the Gravettian. For Breuil, the chronology of Palaeolithic parietal art depended on the existence of two cycles: one Aurignacian-Perigordian, and the other Solutrean-Magdalenian. He drew parallels between Lascaux and the painted figures found in stratigraphy — and thus reliably dated — at the Labattut Perigordian and Blanchard Aurignacian shelters.
A more nuanced evaluation was advanced by Annette Laming, who pointed out that this iconography displayed characteristics that could be attributed to either of the two major cycles. Initial radiocarbon dating tests In , fragments of charcoal from the excavations in the Shaft were analysed in the Chicago laboratory of Willard Libby, who had pioneered the method. The results, a date of 15, years BP, placed Lascaux in the Magdalenian culture.
He concluded that Lascaux was Solutrean. These successive adjustments show the difficulties in establishing a precise, well-argued chronological scheme. A formal analysis of the figures at Lascaux leads one to think that the art belongs to a Solutrean tradition.

Early humans were active hunters of horses, and finds from the Ice Age have been recovered from many sites. At that time, land which now forms the British Isles was part of a peninsula attached to continental Europe by a low-lying area now known as ” Doggerland “, and land animals could migrate freely between what is now island Britain and continental Europe. The domestication of horses , and their use to pull vehicles, had begun in Britain by BC; by the time of the Roman conquest of Britain , British tribes could assemble armies which included thousands of chariots.
Horse improvement as a goal, and horse breeding as an enterprise, date to medieval times ; King John imported a hundred Flemish stallions , Edward III imported fifty Spanish stallions , and various priories and abbeys owned stud farms. Laws were passed restricting and prohibiting horse exports and for the culling of horses considered undesirable in type. By the 17th century, specific horse breeds were being recorded as suitable for specific purposes, and new horse-drawn agricultural machinery was being designed.
Fast coaches pulled by teams of horses with Thoroughbred blood could make use of improved roads , and coaching inn proprietors owned hundreds of horses to support the trade. Steam power took over the role of horses in agriculture from the midth century, but horses continued to be used in warfare for almost another years, as their speed and agility over rough terrain remained unequalled.
Working horses had all but disappeared from Britain by the s, and today horses in Britain are kept almost wholly for recreational purposes. The earliest horse remains found in the area now covered by Britain and Ireland date to the Middle Pleistocene. Dependent on the rise and fall of sea levels associated with advancing and retreating Ice ages , this allowed humans and fauna to migrate between these areas; as the climate fluctuated, hunters could follow their prey, including equids.
Although much of Britain from this time is now beneath the sea, remains have been discovered on land that show horses were present, and being hunted, in this period. The Holocene period began around 11, years ago and continues to the present. Horse remains dating from the Mesolithic period, or Middle Stone Age, early in the Holocene, have been found in Britain, though much of Mesolithic Britain now lies under the North Sea , the Irish Sea and the English Channel , and material which may include archaeological evidence for the presence of the horse in Britain continues to be washed into the sea, by rivers and coastal erosion.
